Stuber Review

Stuber is a weak comedy that’s elevated from complete mediocrity by the pairing of Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista.

Score: 3 / 5

Let’s start of by stating the movie is called Stuber, because the Uber driver in this movie is named Stu. Let that sink in for a moment. That might give you an idea of what this movie is going to be like on the smart comedy level.

Anywhoo, Stuber stars the comedian Kumail Nanjiani, and Dave Bautista (Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy) as Stu the Uber driver, and Vic the no nonsense police officer respectively. The plot is pretty simple, Vic is trying to nail a drug lord who is about to make a big move, but this also happens to be the same day he is getting lasik eye surgery. Due to his nearly blind state, he enlists the help of Stu his Uber driver to not only drive him around but assist him as he stumbles his way through the plot.

Again this isn’t a smart Sherlock Holmes mystery, so to make up for the ridiculousness of the plot, the buddy cop pair better work, and it does. Bautisita has always done a good job playing off comedic talents and it shows once again as Nanjiani continues to show that he deserves more roles outside of Silicon Valley. The best moments of this movie tend to be Stu’s reaction to the the craziness going on around him and Bautista escalating the situation.

It just sucks that the plot forces things to drop down to a dumber level than is needs. These two paired together for a better reason other than Bautista’s Vic being mostly blind would have avoided a lot of butt of the jokes being Bautista can’t see. It gets old pretty quickly.

All that said, I still had fun watching this movie, it’s just not going to stick in your head too much after you leave the theater.
